This very unusual vintage driving watch was designed for Seiko by automotive design genius Giorgetto Giugiaro (Maserati Ghibli, DeLorean, VW Scirocco, 1966 Ford Mustang, Alfa Romeo 159 and many others). But he also did industrial design for Seiko and Nikon among others. This watch was made in 1983, closely following the first somewhat cruder model made in 1982. The first one was apparently worn by another automotive star, the great Formula One triple world champion Ayrton Senna during the time he was driving for Lotus. Giugiaro went on to design another famous Seiko -- the one worn by Sergourney Weaver in Aliens! What is immediately noticeable about this one is the interesting "tilt to the right" of the watch face. The purpose is to permit the watch to be worn (face on the inside of the wrist) with the displayed information easily visible to a driver holding the steering wheel in the classic 10 o'clock -- 2 o'clock position. And the information available for display is comprehensive: tachymeter, time, timer, stop watch, alarm -- all selected with the easily rotating click-stopped bezel. Oh, and if you need to know at 200mph, it also shows the day and date! It has a push-button light for night use and is water resistant to 200 meters. I have owned this watch since new, and it is in virtually mint condition, in both appearance and function. All of the features work flawlessly, and the heavy black-anodized metal case and deployant-buckle are free of scratches, marks or scuffs. The gold markings on the face are in exceptional condition. And finally, I just installed a new battery, and it is running perfectly. I doubt that there is another one out there in equally fine condition.
