Short History: Agassiz & Compagnie In 1847 Agassiz became the sole owner of the company which he renamed Agassiz & Compagnie. In 1852, his nephew Ernest Francillon joined the company. During the 1850s, Francillon took over the business from his ailing uncle, focusing on increasing and improving the production of standard watch designs. Ancienne Maison Auguste Agassiz, Ernest Francillon, successeur In 1862 Francillon renamed the venture Ancienne Maison Auguste Agassiz, Ernest Francillon, successeur, adding his own name to his uncle’s, but acknowledging the latter’s pioneering role. As he took over day-to-day management, Francillon looked for ways of improving and streamlining production, then parceled out to a number of different sites. His idea was to gather everything under one roof, in keeping with his vision of a factory where mechanical manufacturing and assembly methods would enable him to make and finish watches in one integrated process. The Agassiz Watch Company was established in 1876 by Georges Agassis, however it was Georges father, Auguste who first established a watch dealership that was the catalyst for the company to be set up. The Company is always associated with another great name in horology circles; Longines, and Georges was earlier involved in the running of the Longines project as their finance and marketing manager, about ten years prior to him setting up alone and operating as the "Agassiz Watch Company". Do not be surprised if you happen to come across a watch with "Agassiz-Longines" on the face, as these were produced at times throughout the company's lifespan. Always a man of high standards, Georges set up his company with a vision to create timepieces that would be world famous for their quality of manufacture and precision. Right from the start it was decided that they would make whole watches and not use cheap imported watch cases for any of their movements. A breakthrough for Georges came in 1889, when the company was awarded a special award in recognition of the quality of its movements at the World Exhibition of Watches held in Paris. The award of the prestigious Gold Medal for its contribution to the world of horology confirmed Agassiz as a major world player in quality watch manufacture. After twenty years behind the helm, he handed over the running of the business to Auguste Sandoz. This change led to a wider range of Agassiz watches being developed, with the use of precious stones and high quality jewelery work being done on cases and dials. Complicated movements were also developed and housed in ultra-thin cases, a major development for the time that made their watches more attractive, wearable and importantly kept the company visible to a worldwide watch buying public. In the early to mid 1900s, the Company established a reputation as a supplier of high-grade repeater pocket watch movements, chronometers and great looking, almost military style watches. They also branched out into making clocks, with some fine 8-Day movements. For the collector, Agassiz watches are very affordable, even though they appear to be quite rare when compared with some other watch brands. If you are short on funds, this should be one manufacturer that you take a look at. Fine quality and good looks would make this a great addition to any fine watch collection. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches). - Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped - because repairs may be expensive. - Antique watches are generally NOT waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture. - If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust. - If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc. - Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard. - When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement. - If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i.e. for minutes, NOT hours). - Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism. - Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches. - IF the watch is dirty - allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down. - To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does NOT leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your Watch repair expert to get an appropriate cloth. - Keep your antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement. - Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed. - Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE BIDDING: Vintage watches are very delicate and I package to the highest degree to prevent damage. High altitude flights can be hard on watches due to extreme temperature changes. This can cause the oil viscosity to decrease (gum up) and prevent a watch from ticking (the balance moving freely etc.). It may need to be oiled when it arrives regardless of its recent servicing (if applicable). Although this is only a very slight possibility it can occasionally happen. Please bear in mind that you are buying a used watch and it will require service at some point in time. Return policy: I guarantee you complete satisfaction with all my high quality products. If you receive an item you did not order or if an item you ordered is received damaged or defective, I will refund you the price you paid for it or replace it with identical one. Ebay recently made changes to their feedback system where sellers can suffer SEVERE penalties if anything besides a "5" is left and you may be hurting your favorite sellers without knowing it. What are these penalties? *Any rating below 4.9: Seller pays an additional 5% in fees to sell on ebay *Any rating below 4.8: Seller pays an additional 10% in fees to sell on ebay, and seller's listings are demoted in ebay's search - making them harder to find *Any rating below 4.6: Seller pays an additional 5% in fees to sell on ebay and loses powerseller status. Listings are further demoted in ebay's search *Any rating below 4.3: Penalty -Seller's listings are moved the the last pages of search results *Any rating below 4.1: Penalty - Seller is no longer allowed to list on ebay (Click here for ebay's policy of banning sellers at a 4.1 rating) eBay tells you a "4" rating means the item was accurately described, that you were satisfied with the seller's communication, the item was shipped quickly, and the shipping charges were reasonable - which a normal person would say is a good thing. However, ebay treats a "4" as a request to terminate the sellers's ebay account, charge the seller more, and make it difficult for bidders to find that seller's items. If you feel that the service you received does not warrant a "5" rating, PLEASE contact us so we can resolve any issues for you. How accurate was the item description?
